EALC: calligraphy contest winners

picture of a hand doing calligraphy Dr. Jeffrey Newmark of the East Asian Languages and Cultures Program is proud to announce the results of the Japanese Language Program's Third Annual Calligraphy Contest. They are:

First Place: Yunmiao Wang

Second Place: Kaihim Wong

Third Place: Hongqiang Zhao

The winning entries earned distinction for their clear penmanship, use of space, stroke order, and overall rendition of the characters. Contestants reproduced the opening line of Kamo no Chōmei’s Hōjōki (An Account of a Ten-Foot-Square Hut), a prominent piece of classical literature from 1212:

行くかわの流れはたえずして
しかももとの水にあらず

(The current of the flowing river does not cease,
and yet the water is not the same water as before)

All contestants should be congratulated for their accomplishments in learning the Japanese script. It is their first step to mastering an immense yet altogether beautiful set of characters.
